People often wonder what a rhythm guitarist does in a band. What is his or her role? Well, there is actually no rule that differentiates a rhythm and lead guitarist. Both roles can be reversed. For example, the lead guitar may do some strumming while rhythm will do some picking. As long as what they do complement each other then there is no conflict.

However, the rhythm guitarist must be part of the rhythmic structure of the song being played. The sounds that come from the rhythm guitarist should add body to the music being played. To be more graphic about the two roles. We can take a sheet music or tablature of a song with chords marked and plays the song through using just one guitar playing the chords marked on the music. This is the rhythm guitar part. If there is any other guitar sound in the song then that is the lead guitar.

A good technique to learning rhythm guitar is by listening to band music and zooming into the rhythm part. Bands like The Shadows, The Who, The Beatles and The Moody Blues have defined rhythm guitars and they can be good reference.

Another way to study rhythm is to listen to the drummers and bass players. Try to feel the rhythm of a song and see if you can play along using chord strumming. The goal here is to fill a necessary role in the music’s rhythm.

Practice with a low volume first and experiment with your guitar strumming. You could try muting strings and not strum using the 6 strings, leave some of the music to the lead and bass player to fill up.

The lead guitarist plays for solo breaks or extended solos during a song and may not follow the basic rhythm of the song. The body of the song rests upon the rhythm guitarist.

When it comes to developing a passion for learning musical instruments such as playing the guitar, there is always a great sense of accomplishment that comes with the success of challenging oneself to learn such new skill. Not all, however, strive with the same intensity of will until the end, as they often struggle with understanding the guitar, not increasing their skill as fast as they had hoped and eventually leads to giving up on the instrument and themselves.

It’s true learning to play the guitar is never without hardship and practice, but when taught the right manner, will also instill the right knowledge to any beginner that will build up a desire to continue learning instead of despair out of hardship.

The most common mistake made by guitar tutors is educating their student from their advanced point of view instead of guiding a beginner’s hesitant and curious longing to learn. While a typical guitar teacher gives out a guitarists point of view on how a guitar is played, a student learns playing and increases his education with the satisfaction of actually playing the guitar.

Yes, one can provide guitar lessons on chords, scales and guitar technique. These musical elements can be explained to a student but the same are all not enough to develop a student into a player. Many guitar teaches forget to motivate their students by empowering them to give themselves personal satisfaction which does not come from the average black board training but instead through the opportunity to play songs.

By allowing guitar beginners s to learn songs that they are familiar with or are currently listening to, they become aware of an increase in what they know, hear their performance develop, and continue to strive to learn more. Musical theory, given any instrument, comes up too dry until a student has had the chance to apply it.

The same is true when learning the guitar. A chance to apply what was learned makes the lesson effective and once a student starts playing actual guitar songs and realizing the truths in the theories he was presented with, he will venture out to play more and ultimately discover more theories to understand his craft better.

The bottom line, guitar chords, guitar techniques, and theories are taught more effectively when taught in the context of a known song, instead of discussing them in their purity. After all, we take up the guitar to learn how to play. Being able to learn from a performance point of view increases our interests in playing and maintains our passion for the music.

There’s always something new to learn when you have tried something new. Like in learning to play guitar, once you have gotten familiar with the chords and strumming a guitar, there is always that itch to keep developing your skill. So why not add some pretty cool finger picking into your repertoire. Watching top guitarists perform and it may look difficult to learn. But make no mistake, once you have learned this skill, you will be amazed at the new-found difference it makes in your quality of music.

If you are without a guitar teacher and have managed to teach yourself to play the guitar so far, you can always learn finger picking by listening to existing materials from popular and even classical artists like Peter Paul & Mary. Keep it simple by working out the picking patterns the guitarists are using while learning the chords. It is easy to be intimidated with such types of music but worry not. Finger picking is actually a lot easier when you really listen to it for the first time.

An incredible achievement to have when it comes to being an accomplished finger picking guitar player is the pride in having delivered a brilliant guitar solo with the melody of your guitar and the speed of your fingers. Get yourself finger picking exercises that are designed to help you develop your skills and discipline you into a faster pace. Continuous work on those exercises will build you enough skill to even perform your own guitar solo.

Working on your finger picking lessons includes keeping your wrist as relaxed as possible while putting effort in using the muscles on your forearms. With your left hand keep your fingers over the fret board in an arch shape and place each finger to a particular fret. On the other hand, use your thumb to play the bass notes in the fifth and sixth strings while the other three fingers play the melody.

The guitar is an amazing instrument to master. And the skill you can develop by exercises such as finger picking and ultimately applying them to your own personal musical style may just bring out a great performance in you.

Acoustic guitar flatpicking techniques are ways to convey your music to the audience. This allows you to make your guitar playing more interesting and unique especially when you do not have the luxury of having electronic effects that electric guitars have.

Acoustic guitar flat picking is how you handle the guitar strings using a pick. It is how you control the volume, tone and manage the clarity of your flatpicking. The right hand (in most cases) controls how you play the acoustic guitar and how it produces a sound as well. Concentration should be given to this right hand.

Freedom of movement should be the main part of your flatpicking technique. The right hand should be able to move freely from the sound hole to the bridge. This will allow the widest range of tones available on the acoustic guitar. A known obstacle to freedom of movement is anchoring the right hand by pressing down the guitar body with your little finger.

A lot of guitar flatpickers anchor their little finger on the guitar body and with much practice the sound that comes out becomes clearer. But then the ability to move the right hand is very limited. This would entail the player to move his right hand for a tonal effect by swiveling it around and still touching the body of the guitar or lifting the finger and place it on a new position. These method increases muscular tension and causes discomfort in the long run.

Another basic guitar flatpicking technique is the ability for the upward and downward movement of the pick to connect between any two strings as and when it is required. After some practice this is not difficult to do. The basic thing is when you are deciding whether to play using upward or downward strokes is dependent on the next note. If you are playing a note on the sixth string and your next note is on the fifth, you will definitely use a down stroke to produce the next sound.

Down strokes are much easier than upward strokes so must do this. There is a need to practice both ways of stroking especially when the guitar piece calls for it. The technique here is to practice finishing your down stroke and progress to an upward stroke to strike on the next note.

There is nothing like consistency in practicing acoustic guitar flatpicking techniques. As you move forward in time, your guitar playing technique will develop its uniqueness.

It might take some time for a guitar player to start doing finger picking on an acoustic guitar. Most often a guitarist develops his or her own of finger picking. Whether it is a developed technique or learned from a guitar lesson, it is always a good practice to know the basic principles behind finger picking guitar styles.

There are numerous finger picking techniques like classical, Travis picking, chord melody and flamenco. A great way to learn this is by watching some of the greatest guitar soloists. There is a DVD called Essential Exercises for Finger Style Guitar(Check this DVD out) developed by three great guitarists, Mark Hanson, Pete Huttlinger and Al Petteway. This is one guitar resource that is full of information and is worthwhile having. Happy Traum also has some tutorials on Homespun Tapes(Click to see). Getting such learning aids can greatly enhance guitar playing techniques.

There is not one finger picking style that can represent what the technique is all about. The beginner guitarist need not know everything but can find one particular style that he or she can be comfortable with and that can produce good sounds. A folk guitar player may be able to play the patterns and scales well but the style he or she is used to may not be able to produce sounds like a classical guitarist. Thus, individual styles play an important role in finger picking.

A plectrum is used by some guitarists but this sometimes discourages other players due to its difficulty. The key to getting the fingers and thumbs working as independent units is slow practice. The slow movement allows the guitarist to feel the chord and the note. The metronome should be on a very low setting. The bass notes of the chords should then be played and only adding an incidental note on the first finger until the guitarist will feel confident.

Novice finger picking guitarists should start playing songs that maybe a little below technical standards and start strumming the chords until there is a feel of playing along with the lyrics. They fact is that there should be a degree of comfort when doing the song.

When the song is already a bit mastered, the guitarist should resort to a finger picking pattern then apply it to the song. Here are some songs that are recommended to start practicing finger picking:

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton (Click to Get MP3 of this song)

The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals (Click to Get MP3 of this song)

More Than Words by Extreme (Click to Get MP3 of this song)

For the more ambitious players, there is The Anonymous Romance or Spanish Romance which can really be a challenging piece.

Learning acoustic finger picking is not as difficult when the guitar player has the motivation and persistence to practice and look for guitar pieces that will match the player’s style.

When learning to play the guitar, there comes a time when you must excel from being a beginner to an advanced player. Constantly learning a variety of techniques adds depth and variety to your performance. This also tells your audience that you are not an average guitar player but a true artist. One such technique is the mastery of guitar scales.

Learning guitar scales is crucial when you want to be more than just a guitar player. This advances your guitar skills as this includes understanding the 7 modes of the major scale and reaching such familiarization with it to the point of enabling you to make your own guitar solos and riffs.

The first step in learning guitar scales is studying the major scale and its specific note intervals. All 7 modes start off with a given note and having full grasp of the major scale makes memorizing patterns a whole lot simpler.

A scale is a series of notes with predefined intervals, starting with a root note, and ending on the same note one octave higher.
If music has the ability to impact our emotions and mood, the same goes versa. An interval pattern of scales will define its mood and style, ranging from happy and upbeat (Ionian mode), to sad (Aeolian mode), to sinister (Locrian mode).

Below are the 7 guitar modes which commonly used in Western music. Note that the W denotes 2 semitones while the H means 1 semitone on each scale note.

Ionian Mode (the Major Scale)

Note intervals: W-W-H-W-W-W-H
Mood: Happy
Musical styles: applies to country, jazz, and rock

Dorian Mode (starts on the second note of the major scale)

Note intervals: W-H-W-W-W-H-W
Mood: Jazzy
Musical styles: applies to rock, country, and jazz

Phrygian Mode (starts on the third note)

Note intervals: H-W-W-W-H-W-W
Mood: Spanish
Musical styles: applies to flamenco and Spanish guitar

Lydian Mode (on the fourth note)

Note intervals: W-W-W-H-W-W-H
Mood: mesmerizing, dreamy
Musical styles: applies to jazz, country, and rock

Mixolydian Mode (on the fifth note)

Note intervals: W-W-H-W-W-H-W
Mood: Blues
Musical styles: applies to blues, rockabilly, and country

Aeolian Mode (a.k.a. the minor scale, starts on the sixth note)

Note intervals: W-H-W-W-H-W-W
Mood: sad
Musical styles: applies to pop, blues, metal, rock, and country

Locrian Mode (on the second note)

Note intervals: H-W-W-H-W-W-W
Mood: sinister, horrifying
Musical styles: applies to jazz and fusion

Once you start understanding and applying these scales as you practice your guitar, continuously include it in your regular guitar exercises. It won’t be too long before you have mastered the use and guitar scales and can fully incorporate its philosophies not just in your level of playing, but in creating new riffs and solos to impress your audience as well.

So you have played around with your first acoustic guitar and have gotten around the chords and a few good songs. What is the point of learning about guitar scales, you may ask? You’ve learned guitar chords and can follow them on your favorite song, so is there really much to it by learning guitar scales? Do you really need more standardized lessons after getting the hang of playing the guitar and adapting your own musical style?

Knowledge of guitar scales gives your performance better control. Understanding the guitar fret board comes as one of the major reasons for learning guitar scales. Full familiarity and awareness of your fret board provides you with complete control over your style of playing as well as adds intensity and diversity to your performance.

Yes, you can play a certain song you already know and lots more after that, but what happens when you need to change it up a bit? The ability to be spontaneous and redefining the melody marks the difference between playing music and a giving a great performance. Applying the use of guitar scales helps achieve that quality of music.

Learning Guitar scales makes adaptation of new music easier. Most of the time, you learn a new song by finding the notes by ear. Knowing guitar scales takes out the burden of having to guess the notes since you will be able to recognize which part of the scale is used. Scales adds to your skills in playing the guitar and ultimately builds up your recognition of sound to learn a new melody and make it your own.

Knowing guitar scales sets your creativity free. Practicing on guitar scales does not just help you adapt to new music without too much difficulty or redefine a familiar sound into your own style. When you apply what you know of scales and how you play based on your talent, this will also help you produce new ideas and new sounds of your own. It allows you to experiment more on what other melodies you can produce as you learn and play guitar.

Learning how to play the guitar is never without learning the right guitar chords. Chords are the combination of notes on a guitar but knowing notes alone is like knowing the alphabet without knowing how to read. It always takes time to learn guitar chords as there are several notes and positions you would have to sit through. But once you have familiarized yourself with all the right chords, it wont be long before all that practice turns into performance.

You can research on the basic and common guitar chords to study or, if you want to be more thorough, you can get a chord dictionary and get a comprehensive list of chords to get started. A chord dictionary is your complete guide to learning guitar chords. This has all the chords known to man. Mind you, you may not be able to use all of them but if you really want to learn broadly, getting one will surely help.

There are two common types of guitar chords, the major and the minor chords. Most western music is based on the major scale with the C major having C D E F G A B and C. These are easily found on a piano but poses a more trickier challenge on guitar, as you have to find the right pattern for each note and constantly carry them out on your guitar to remember them.

When it comes to finding the notes, the lowest C note is at the third fret of the fifth string. D is the open fourth string while E is at the second fret on the fourth string.

F note comes from the third fret on the fourth string while an open third string brings out the G note. Note A is at the second fret of the third string and Note B is the second open string.

Now the challenge comes in memorizing the patterns, playing the chords while constantly changing them to fully grasp the guitar chords. When it comes to playing the C major scale with these frets, remember to use your first finger for notes on the first fret, the second finger for the notes on the second fret and the third for those notes on the third fret. It’s as simple as that.

Having a guitar fret board diagram comes in handy. This will show you where the notes are and even some tabs and chord charts to easy-to-learn songs that you can practice on.

Knowing the notes is just half the battle. Constantly practice the notes and the chords altogether, changing and switching positions continuously. Do this until the lesson becomes the routine, and ultimately, the routine becomes part of playing the guitar naturally and beautifully.

Since you are enthusiastic to learn guitar playing, you might have some ideas that you believe will help speed up the acquisition of the skill. One of the things that you should keep in mind is that you have to practice unhurriedly. You will encounter disappointments when you begin learning but in the end you will understand why a slow learning process is important when it comes to playing the guitar.

In this very fast world we live in, we tend to speed up everything. How we eat, how we read, how we talk, etc. are examples of what this hurried state that we are in. When you say “I don’t have time to do things slowly.” or “I don’t have the patience.” then it would be better not to start with your guitar playing. You have to make time for practice and to practice SLOWLY. Your body needs to learn its own time when playing the guitar. One of the first things you have to know is the natural breaks that occur when you play scales or change chords.

Practicing with a metronome will make you aware of those moments when you are not able to keep in time without straining or rushing. This results because your body does not have the muscular movements set up to go from one area of the fretboard to the other. If you calm down and let your hands and arms move at their own pace, the guitar practice will be more relaxing and enjoyable. When you play in a relaxed manner everything follows. Your mood will be on “happy” mode and eventually you will look forward to practice time.

It is a sight to see professional guitar players move their hands with lightning speed up and down the fretboard. But be assured that the skill was acquired from many hours of practice and slowly at first. Do not imitate these guitar players yet until you are sure of your skill else you might injure your fingertips and your hands. Not only do you need patience and effort to practice but also to learn the proper way to do it and the reason why it should be done. Through trial and error you will learn to adjust, to relax and to play the guitar properly.

Practicing is always emphasized by guitar articles and guitar guides for beginners because it is the only way to perfect the skill. Repeating the chords and strumming or picking will let you have your own pace and style. The aim here is to play the guitar piece instinctively. Know what you are playing by heart so that your fingers and hand will flow to the next chord effortlessly. Get into the habit of repeating chord changes and guitar scales in a calm manner. You will gain more benefits in the long run as you do so.

The classical guitar is a mesmerizing instrument to study. It brings the rewarding experience of being able to successfully play bass with melody and accompaniment together after the challenging process of learning and hitting the right chords and notes. It certainly becomes more enjoyable when you start playing easy classical songs.

One of the great things about classical guitar music is that most artists back in the day composed what can be defined as easy pieces, designed for accompaniment and even solo instrumentals for a nylon string guitar. A musical legacy we benefit from at present.

Though, it is never without a challenge, of course. One of which is that off putting sound a classical guitar makes as you move your hand up and down the neck of the guitar. The friction made by the fingers wrapped between the steel wires sometimes creates a stronger volume of sound than the actual music itself, intimidating most beginners. Fret not, its all a matter of technique as you lift you finger ever so slightly while switching positions. If you have done this without losing control of your playing, then you are on your way.

Easy classical guitar pieces can be found from some of the most popular songs by The Beatles like Fool on the Hill(Listen This Song) or I’ve Just Seen a Face(Listen This Song). These are classic melodies that everyone loves to listen to and every musician loves to perform. If you are up to the challenge, there are several collections of classical pieces you can also take on like those of Johann Sebastian Bach and Jerry Willard.

And once you are fully pleased in playing easy classical guitar songs, another exciting challenge is to see, or hear, what your skill can do with a more modern type of sound. Yes, you do not need to confine yourself to classical pieces. Besides the many performances you can create with classical guitar music from say, The Beatles, you can venture out into current arrangements and see how you can add a classical twist to the contemporary tunes.

Overall, a great thing about learning and playing classical guitar is the great fulfillment you will get even with just easy classical guitar pieces on your hands. So go ahead and start playing.
